Spirit of UDI Awards

Each spring UDI - Calgary honours its leaders at the "Spirit of UDI" Awards, a celebration of voluntarism in the land development industry to recognize its many dedicated volunteer members from the previous year.

"UDI - Calgary relies heavily on our volunteers to provide the valuable technical and planning expertise needed to assist in our negotiations and discussions with The City of Calgary and Region. It is through the work of volunteers that UDI - Calgary is able to respond to the many challenging issues facing the development industry. It is appropriate for our members to recognize our Award recipients for their contributions not only to the organization but to the industry as a whole"

The Ron Nolan Memorial Award

The Ron Nolan Memorial Award (named in memory of Mr. Ron Nolan, former CEO of UDI - Calgary) was first awarded in 2001, and is presented in recognition of an active member's long-time contribution to UDI and the development industry as a whole. It is not necessarily awarded annually. The recipient is selected by the UDI Board of Directors when appropriate, based on the following criteria:

They have demonstrated significant support of UDI - Calgary over an extended period of time (continuous member for at least 10 years)
They have shown exemplary ability in scanning the environment affecting the development industry.
They have demonstrated leadership ability by serving as the Chair of several UDI Committees or Task Forces and have consistently shown peak performance character and habits that maintain personal energy and dynamism, self-direction and successful interpersonal relations.
They have achieved prominence through sustained commitment to UDI and their personal and organizational activities have created a memorable impact on the community.

The Spirit of UDI Award

The "Spirit of UDI Award" was created to recognize the outstanding achievement and dedication of individual members to the UDI - Calgary organization and the industry. The recipient of this award is selected from nominations submitted by the membership, based on one or more of the following criteria:

Their achievements have brought significant awareness to UDI - Calgary from outside parties or groups; or
Their achievements have resulted in considerable cost-savings for UDI - Calgary/members; or
Their achievements have been recognized outside of UDI - Calgary as a contribution to Calgarians and their quality of life.

Exceptional Service Awards

The Exceptional Service Awards are presented to volunteers at the committee and task force levels who exemplify what the words volunteer and exceptional service means. The recipients of these awards are chosen at the discretion of the Committee Chairs, the Board of Directors and UDI - Calgary Management.

2009 Award Recipients

The 2009 Ron Nolan Memorial Award was presented to Mr. Greg Brown, Principal, Brown & Associates Planning Group. Greg has a wide range of planning experience gained through employment in both the private and public sectors. He began his career in St. Johns Newfoundland learning the importance of public consultation and clear policy statements that are relevant to actual development practices. Mr Brown's vast work experience has included the Ministry of Agriculture, City of Brampton, Stanley Associates and Alsten Holdings. Mr Brown has an MBA and his unique blend of eductaion and experience has given him the ability to act as a creative and successful planning manager and strategist for land development companies, municipalities and individuals. Greg has over 28 years of land use - land development experience and his knowledge and expertise has been invaluable to UDI and the development industry as a whole.

The 2009 Spirit of UDI Award was presented to Mr. Michael Roberts, Senior Principal with Progressive Engineering Ltd. Mr. Roberts obtained his Engineering degree from Dalhousie University, and a Masters Degree specializing in project management at the University of Calgary. Since gradualting, Michael has been actively engaged in all facets of the land development consulting indusrty in Calgary involving the planning and design of over 5,000 residential lots. Throughout most of this period, Michael has bee actively involved with UDI serving on the Technical Committee and for the last 3 years Chairing the Technical Committee, while also serving on the Negotiating Committee, Water Management Committee and Board of Directors. His many hours of dedication and contributions have led to numerous improvements in the way the land development process is undertaken, in cooperation with the City of Calgary.
