In 2009, several high profile PVC water main breaks occurred in Calgary resulting in large sinkholes garnering much media attention. These breaks raised questions and concerns about the reliability of donated water infrastructure, the existing level of inspection and specifications, and general PVC water main quality. PVC water mains now account for approximately 50 percent of the water distribution mains in the City of Calgary. This presentation will review the City's analysis of recent failures, relevant Standards and Guidelines in place to prevent such failures and the overall performance statistics of PVC in the City of Calgary.
